Modern Kickboxing
Kickboxing is a modern martial sport of western origin. It is based upon earlier systems of sparring. Most ancient eastern and western styles of martial arts have had methods of sparring. Sparring in various forms dates back to ancient times, Roman gladiators fought in amphitheatres, Knights fought in jousting tournaments, fencers fought duels etc. There have been many forms of fighting for sport. More recently karate and kung fu martial artists have tested themselves in sparring. In Japanese martial art systems, sparring is called "Kumite". Modern kickboxing developed in the 1960's and 70's in the USA, from these modern Japanese and Chinese systems. There are many styles of modern kickboxing such as points semi contact, continuous semi contact, full contact etc. The rules and requirements vary according to the association that hosts the kickboxing event
